Travel, walking bus and upcoming projects
Travel is a major strand of the current Global Citizenship and Travel theme, with a strong emphasis on safe, active journeys to school. Pupils are encouraged to walk, cycle, scoot or use the “walking bus” where possible, helping to reduce traffic and emissions around the school.
-
In October, a travel officer visited the school and, with the help of the Green Committee, carried out an audit of walking routes to school; the report is awaited and a copy will be sent to the council to support safer active travel in the area.
-
The walking bus continues on an ongoing basis every Friday where children and parents are invited to meet at Cuala at 8.35am and walk to school together.
-
In February the school took part in the Big Travel Challenge, which was a great success, despite the rain!
-
We will also participate in National Bike Week and National Scoot to School Week, supporting our children with healthy and more sustainable travel choices.
Fundraising, recycling and the year’s Green Schools calendar
Environmental action in Loreto also has a strong global dimension, linking local efforts with support for communities abroad. Recycling and fundraising activities show pupils how small actions can make a difference both at home and overseas.
-
Across the year, the calendar includes a wide range of events: battery collection and the An Taisce Water Poster Competition in January; the Big Travel Challenge in February; application for renewal of the Green Flag and World Water Day (22nd March) in March; litter picking and planting/gardening in April; National Bike Week in May; and National Scoot to School Week and a uniform swap in June, alongside regular initiatives such as the Shoebox Appeal and DLR recycled Christmas decoration competition which further strengthen the school’s culture of sustainability and care.
